Contemplative prayer is the most meaningful thing that can happen to a human being as anybody who has seriously practised it will testify. Hence why people will give up sex, love, family, children, home and wealth in order to pursue it. Yet, strangely perhaps, it is always accompanied by the possibility that it might be an illusion for the brain, after all, is a very strange place. Yet, in a world of such great mysteries and wonders, it is this very uncertainty that I find re-assuring. This is in contrast with atheists who must surely be wrong because they are so certain they are right. ‘We’ve got science’ they say. But science itself now knows that it knows hardly anything.
