The last thing any Australian would want is poms feeling sorry for them. But we should thank our lucky stars that but for the most atrocious luck imagineable they would have won the ashes. At Trent Bridge, but for the finest hairsbreadth of a feather, they would have pulled off one of the most remarkable victories in test history. They would almost certainly have won at Old Trafford but for the weather. At the Riverside they might well have won too had they not run into what must be the most inspired spell of fast bowling since Bob Willis destroyed Australia at Headingley in 1981. The baggy greens will be back.
