The nothing before everything
A theological blog 24 iii 19. Spellbound in my prayer this Lent by the absolute nothing of which so many mystics talk. Also reading Eliot’s Ash Wednesday as I have done every Lent for years. But now as if with new eyes for the first time. The extraordinary beauty shining through the meaningless contradictions and syntactical chaos of the poem is probably as close to the shadow of that nothing before everything (the universe wasn’t made by God but simply emerged out of nothing say Hawking and Krauss in moments of unconscious theological brilliance) as we are going to get in literature.
