All high cockalorum and the prosperous future.

The Conservative Party Conference makes me weep.  What about climate?  The scientific evidence is now overwhelming, I doubt whether any once-controversial issue in science has ever reached the level of consensus that climate now has.   The scientists are warning us solemnly that if we don’t deal far more decisively than we are doing with climate change in the few years we now have left, we are preparing a future hell on earth – whole countries going under water, much of the world’s most fertile land drowned including East Anglia and the fens, ferocious hurricanes and severe droughts, millions starving, hundreds of millions, they are telling us, of climate refugees, savage resource wars… It’s the ignorance of politicians that dismays me so much.  How many of those at the Manchester conference, have read the IPCC reports, The Tyndall website, bulletins from the University of East Anglia, the Royal Society site, the Met Office on the future of climate, Six Degrees: Our Future on a Hotter Planet by Mark Lynas, Tim Flannery’s The Weather Makers?  Or is it they are getting their information from just the odd article in The Daily Mail?  This is the greatest challenge that has ever faced the human race – you’d have thought it would have been at the top of any political agenda.  But no.  It’s all high cockalorum and grand visions of Brexit, no deal and the prosperous future.  Why aren’t they paying attention?  Our poor children.
