Rationalists generally think that primitive people believed in religion because they didn’t have science.  Offering sacrifice to the gods was the only way they could think of of getting their crops to grow.  This is a complete misconception. Primitive people believed in religion because they had a strong sense of a numinous dimension of nature that the material structures of nature cannot themselves explain,  the many evidences of which they have left us in the inspirations of their art.  An awareness that many ratiionalists appear to have lost.
