‘The Lord will come with great might and all flesh shall see him.’   The motif of the Advent liturgy is the coming glory and shining light of God.  And surely we see something of this divine glory already shining in the beautiful natural things around us.  For most of my life the phenomena of nature have been  just that,  the things of nature that surround us,  But now I see their  beauty as already shining  with something of the divine glory.  ‘In animals’ said Aristotle, ‘there is something of the divine’.  How I despise the view of so many of my fellow Catholics that animals are just things put there by God for our use.  The dominion of Genesis doesn’t mean ‘use as you like’ but ‘care for the creation’.
